Yuma Scorpions News Release
The Yuma Scorpions of the Golden Baseball League today made a blockbuster trade with the Laredo Broncos of the United League. The Scorpions acquired five players, including two with Triple-A experience from the Broncos for future considerations.
Right handed pitchers Miguel Pinango, Juan Carlos Ovalles and Julio Pinto will join the Scorpions along with outfielder Jonel Pacheco and infielder Jaime Morales.
Pinango is penciled in as the ace of the Scorpions staff. He is only 27 but has spent seven years in the Mets organization and four years with the Dodgers. In the past three seasons the 6'1" right hander has had 47 starts for AAA Las Vegas and 11 more for AAA Albuquerque. He's worked more than 315 inning of AAA ball in the past three season in the PCL. His workhorse season was 2006 when he pitched 152 innings going 10-7 for AA Binghamton.
The other player who has some AAA time acquired in the deal is speedy outfielder Jonel Pacheco. He spent the last four seasons in the Pirates chain finishing last season by hitting.400 in his call up to AAA Indianapolis. Listed as only 5'9" the right handed Pacheco still packs plenty of punch. In two full seasons with AA Altoona he hit 26 home runs with 110 RBI. At 27 he's also a defensive gem registering a.986 fielding percentage over the past four seasons.
Ovalles is a solid right hander who appeared in 31 games in the Atlantic League with Lancaster last season. He also has two full seasons in High-A ball in Winston-Salem and Potomac and brief stint with AA Harrisburg.
The other pitcher with AA time is right hander Julio Pinto. The 25 year old Venezuelan was 4-3 for AA New Hampshire in the Blue Jays chain in 2008 and 3-0 in High-A with Dunedin. Last season he had a 2.61 ERA appearing in 30 games in Laredo.
Morales is a 25 year old infielder who can play either third or short. After spending three seasons in the Phillies system he had 23 RBI in 61 games in Laredo last season.
Scorpions v-p of baseball operations Peter Young and field manager Darryl Brinkley will attend the combined GBL-Northern League Free Agent Camp in Scottsdale, Arizona in early April. The Scorpions will also hold their own tryout camp in early May in Yuma.
