Yuma Scorpions News Release

(Yuma, AZ) - The Yuma Scorpions announced today that two of their top pitchers of 2005 have placed in the top 3 in the GBL's Rookie Pitcher of the Year award, and their star outfielder was considered one of the 5 best players in the league this year. Mesa Miners' 12-game winner Manny Ayala won the GBL Rookie Pitcher of the Year honor, but finishing 2nd was Scorpions' relief warhorse Jared Terrebonne, and finishing right behind him was Scorpions' starter Kevin Cheppenko. Meanwhile, Surprise Fightin' Falcons first baseman/outfielder Desi Wilson was an easy choice for GBL Most Valuable Player after hitting .411 for the season, but Scorpions' outfielder Juan Lebron finished 5th in the balloting for the award. The announcements were made by the league just 4 days after the league's final game of their inaugural season that crowned the San Diego Surf Dawgs as the league's first champion.

While he spent most of the year accomplishing his goals quietly, Terrebonne was the most consistent pitcher for the Scorpions this past season. The Louisiana native burst onto the scene by pitching his first 22 1/3 innings as a pro without giving up a run. Even after giving up his first run (a solo homer by league MVP Wilson), Terrebonne stayed focused, and allowed his earned run average to move above 2 for only a handful of days. For the season, ‘Bone' made a team-high 40 appearances (all but 1 in relief), going 5-1 with a stellar 1.73 ERA (best on the team). Meanwhile, the best pitcher at the end of the season for the Scorpions was undoubtedly Cheppenko. The native of Thunder Bay in Ontario, Canada, won 9 of his last 10 decisions, and lowered his earned run average by a full run in that span. "Penk" led the team in total starts (18), tied for the team lead in wins (10, with Jorge Perez), was 2nd in innings pitched (100 2/3) and 3rd in strikeouts (66). On the season, Cheppenko was 10-4 with a 4.20 ERA.

Finally, Lebron finished in 5th place in the voting for the MVP award. The former Royals' 1st round draft pick had a piece of 2 of the 3 Triple Crown categories, winning the RBI title (79), and tying for the home run crown (14, with teammate Alexis Hernandez and Surprise outfielder Billy Brown). Lebron also finished with a batting average of .292, and started more games at his position (80) than any other Scorpion. Lebron finished behind Wilson, Long Beach outfielder Ryan Webb, Fullerton 3rd baseman Sean Walsh, and Surf Dawgs' outfielder Scott Goodman in the voting. Meanwhile, Chico's Grant Gregg was named the GBL's Pitcher of the Year, and San Diego 3rd baseman/catcher Nick Guerra took the GBL Rookie of the Year honors.
