New Mexico Scorpions News Release

[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]- New Mexico Scorpions minority owner, Brian Savage has retired after 12 seasons in the NHL. Savage officially retires as a Philadelphia Flyer after playing 66 games in the City Of Brotherly Love last year.

Savage appeared in 647 regular-season games with the Montreal Canadiens, Phoenix Coyotes, St. Louis Blues and Philadelphia Flyers scoring 359 points (192G, 167A). The Sudbury, Ont., native was the 171st overall pick by Montreal in the 1991 draft and joined the Canadiens after the 1994 Olympics.

"I felt it was the right time. The injuries over the last five years played a part and having surgery each summer is one of the reasons I decided to retire," said Savage. "I was skating for most of the summer but four weeks ago just stopped. I didn't feel the urge to keep playing."

After spending over eight seasons with the Canadiens, Savage was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes in 2001-02 where he played for parts of three seasons. After leaving Phoenix he spent the end of the 2003-04 season in St. Louis before moving onto the Flyers last season.

One of the highlights of the left winger's career came in 1994, as a member of the Canadian Olympic team that won a Silver Medal at the Lillehammer Games. He also played for Team Canada at the 1993 and 1999 World Hockey Championships.

As Savage transitions to retired life, he will not be far from the ice rink. The 35-year-old plans to become more involved with the Scorpions wherever he is needed.

"I will be with the Scorpions during part of training camp and at the home opener, Oct. 27," said Savage. "I will be more than willing to help Coach Edwards and Dave Ellett in whatever they need."

The Scorpions will christen the new state-of-the-art Santa Ana Star Center on Friday, October 27, when they face the Arizona Sundogs at 7:35 p.m. This season the Scorpions feature 22 weekend home games. The schedule can also be viewed and printed by visiting www.scorpionshockey.com/schedule.
