New Mexico Scorpions News Release

[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-In front of a record Santa Ana Star Center crowd on 6,283, the Scorpions excited the students with a 7-2 victory over Amarillo. The win gave New Mexico a 4-2-0 record on their season long six-game home stand.

New Mexico wasted no time in getting the School Day crowd on its feet. Chris Robertson scored a shorthanded goal 2:25 into the first period.

Ross McCain gave his team a 2-0 advantage with second goal of the season at the 6:54 mark. After killing off a long Amarillo two-man advantage, the Scorpions got their chance on the power play and made the Gorillas pay.

Seth Leonard grabbed an outlet pass and sped past the Amarillo defense. He beat goaltender A.J. Bucchino to the short side, making it 3-0. Less than four minutes later the lead grew again as Craig Macdonald rang a shot off the crossbar and into the net, for New Mexico's second power play goal of the period.

The second period saw more Scorps offense. Mike MacDonald stuffed home a goal 20 seconds into the middle frame. Jordan Foote slipped the puck through the five-hole for his second goal of the season.

Amarillo lit the lamp for the first time as Gordon Bell picked up his own rebound and tallied his fourth goal of the season. The Scorpions grabbed back their six-goal lead when Torren Delforte found room behind the defense to light the lamp.

The third period was very quiet compared to the opening 40 minutes. The only goal of the period was scored on a two-man advantage by John Snowden.

The Scorpions head to the road for a three-game weekend. Friday the trip starts in Rio Grande Valley before moving to Corpus Christi on Saturday. Sunday afternoon the Scorpions will play in Odessa. All games can be seen for free on the CHL Network.

New Mexico returns to the Santa Ana Star Center on Wednesday, February 25th against Amarillo. It is $1 soda night, so bring your friends and drink up.

Group tickets specials are available for as little as 10 people. Call the Scorpions' office at (505) 881-PUCK (7825) or visit www.scorpionshockey.com to find out more information about your professional hockey team. The Scorpions have been named the 2008 Rio Rancho Rotary Business of the Year.
