Scorpions kick off reading program

The Yuma Scorpions-along with 1st Bank Yuma-have officially kicked off the first part of the Scorpions' Reading Program today. The program is designed to give kids all around Yuma County the incentive to read. The first phase encourages kids to use a single piece of paper-and their imagination. Today, kids in participating school districts will be given a single sheet of paper with the outline of a blank bookmark. They will then be asked to design a bookmark in whatever fashion they choose-as long as a baseball field and the word ‘Reading' appear in their final design. "There is nothing quite like the joy of reading, and the Yuma Scorpions and 1st Bank Yuma are committed to making sure kids in our region discover that joy," said Scorpions' General Manager Pat Brown. "By participating in this program, kids learn why reading is so much fun, and they could also wind up designing the bookmarks that all Yuma County schools will use for this program."

Kids will have until Thursday, December 15th to submit a bookmark design. After all of the designs are submitted, one winner will be chosen from each participating school. Those winners will be invited to and recognized at a pizza party hosted by the Scorpions and 1st Bank Yuma. At the party, the official winning design will be unveiled. That winning design will be used for all of the bookmarks that will be distributed to the schools for the future phases of the program. Kids will soon have incentives to read more books for the chance to win free Scorpions' tickets to the upcoming season.

Important Dates for the Reading Program:

November 4th

All participating private schools and public school districts will receive bookmark entry forms.

December 15th

All participating private schools have their bookmark entry forms ready to be picked up by the Scorpions' staff.

All participating public school district offices have their bookmark entry forms ready to be picked up by the Scorpions' staff.

Winners will be announced in January 2006

Students will begin reading books to earn tickets to Scorpions' games in February 2006
