Scorpions Hold Camp In Venezuela

March 10, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Yuma Scorpions News Release

The Yuma Scorpions of the Golden Baseball League are holding a three day evaluation camp in Barquisimeto, Venezuela this week. Field manager Darryl Brinkley put close to forty players through workouts on Tuesday and Wednesday at the famous Daniel Chico Canonico stadium. When camp breaks on Thursday afternoon it's expected that up to twenty players will earn tickets to Arizona for the Scorpions early May main training camp.

Brinkley, the former Calgary Viper and Baseball America Player of the Year will work with former Viper president Peter Young in putting together the all-Venezuelan line-up that will represent Yuma in 2010. Coincidentally the Scorpions open the season at home against the defending champion Vipers.

Two pitchers have been the standouts in Barquisimeto this week. Renee Cortez has two seasons of Triple-A experience with the Tacoma Rainiers in the Seattle Mariners system. The 6'4" right hander hit 94 on the radar gun on Tuesday. A long reliever throughout most of his career, Cortez is expected to be a starter with the Scorpions.

Another pitcher who has been impressive in camp is right hander Jose Rojas. The 27-year old hurler pitched at the Double-A level in Midland, Texas where he worked more than 40 innings out of the bullpen in the 2008 season.

The Scorpions will be well set at second base with 28-year old Peeter Ramos. He is a veteran of four seasons in Double-A in the San Diego Padres system. His most impressive season was 2007 when he hit .305 with eight home runs and 37 runs batted in.

Also heading north will be a trio of A-Ball veterans. They include 23 year old infielder Walter Correa who put in four seasons in the Oakland A's minor league system, 25-year old catcher Victor Castillo and 25 year old left handed pitcher Jesus Yepez who was a workhorse in the Chicago Cubs system where he threw over 230 innings in three seasons.

Golden Glove Professional Baseball, the organization that will operate the Scorpions, also welcomed GBL commissioner Kevin Outcalt and President and C.E.O. Dave Kaval to Caracas on Tuesday. The executives are putting the finishing touches to their affiliation agreement and exploring the possibility of some post season play in Venezuela.

The Scorpions begin the season with a sixteen game home stand beginning on Wednesday, May 19th at Desert Sun Stadium.
