San Antonio Scorpions News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - The first place San Antonio Scorpions beat Indy Eleven 2-0 Saturday night in front of 7,847 fans at Toyota Field. The win extends the Scorpions' unbeaten run at home to six games and was powered by standout performances from Walter Restrepo, Billy Forbes and Stephen DeRoux.
The Scorpions took control of the flow of play early and repeatedly pushed forward into the Indy Eleven zone. The traffic flowed heavily down the left hand side through Walter Restrepo, who combined well with newly acquired Cèsar Elizondo to create multiple dangerous chances for the Scorpions. After each side traded a shot on goal that required the respective keepers to make a save, San Antonio found the breakthrough in the 28' minute.
Rafael Castillo sent a big left-to-right switch from the sideline that found Billy Forbes just outside the box. Eleven goalie Kristian Nicht had come off his line tracking the ball, and was caught in no-man's land when Forbes controlled, dribbled to his left and then found Zahorski all alone in the six. The Polish striker didn't miss the open net for his team-leading fifth goal of the season and Forbes' league-leading sixth assist.
The home side doubled their advantage ten minutes later on a couple of firsts. Castillo sent in an out-swinging corner kick from the Scorpions' attacking left that found defender Julius James at the apex of his jump. James hit the ball powerfully towards the ground and just under Nicht before he could get to the ground for his first goal and Castillo's first assist of the season.
In the 56', the Scorpions went down to 10 men when centerback Julius James was shown a straight red card - his third of the season - for what referee Armando Villareal determined to be a dangerous tackle on Indy's Brad Ring. In spite of being at a disadvantage, the red-and-black continued to push forward and create chances offensively. The Eleven had their opportunities, but seemed to be thwarted at every turn by defender DeRoux. The Jamaican repeatedly cleared balls or headed out crosses that were putting the home side under pressure.
San Antonio is on the road to Canada for a Sunday afternoon game again, this time to Ottawa for the first time to face the expansion Fury. The Eleven will be on the road as when they play Minnesota United.
