Scorpions Earn Third Straight Home Win

October 13, 2013 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
San Antonio Scorpions News Release

The San Antonio Scorpions defeated FC Edmonton, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon for their third straight victory at Toyota Field. A lone goal from Polish striker, Tomasz Zahorski was enough to give San Antonio all three points.

FC Edmonton finished the match with just 10 men on the field after an Eddie Edward challenge on Pat Phelan in the 85th minute earned the Edmonton defender a straight red card.

The Scorpions took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break at Toyota Field on Sunday afternoon, against Canadian side, FC Edmonton, thanks to Zahorski's eighth goal of the 2013 NASL Fall Season.

The Scorpions dominated possession in the first half, and had the majority of the scoring opportunities. Sainey Touray looked dangerous to start the match, finding himself in scoring positions multiple times, but not being able to find the killer touch towards goal. In the 13th minute, the Scorpions had a penalty shout when Lyle Martin was pulled down in the box, but the referee waved play on and no call was made.

Edmonton looked bright on the counter during the first 45 minutes, almost catching the Alamo City club in the 26th. Corey Hertzog found the ball at his feet on the left corner of the box, and laced a shot towards the corner of the Scorpions goal, that San Antonio goalkeeper, Jeremy Vuolo, had to make a great save on.

The deadlock would be broken in the 40th minute when Javier Saavedra picked Massimo Mirabelli's pocket on the right wing, and whipped in a cross that met the foot of Zahorski who touched in the opener. The Polish striker almost doubled the Scorpions lead when he forced another great save from Parker just before halftime.

Mirabelli had to leave the match just before the halftime whistle, and was replaced by Anthony Adur.

The Scorpions started the second half, dominating possession once again and passing around the entire field nicely. Dennis Chin and Touray continued to work well up front with Zahorski as the trio carved our a few chances in the second half.

At the 60th minute mark, Edmonton looked to grab a foothold in the game and pressured the Scorpions for 10 minutes straight with smart passing and set pieces. Despite their much improved play, the Eddies could not find a killer touch to equalize.

In the 69th minute, the Scorpions probably had their best chance to double the lead when Touray headed a corner towards goal, but saw it cleared off the line. The Gambian has impressed in his short stint with the Scorpions thus far, but couldn't find a way on the score sheet from the set piece.

Edmonton were reduced to 10 men when Edward came in hard on Phelan with a two-footed challenge, earning the straight red card.

The teams had to suspend play for 30 minutes following a lightning strike, but were able to finish the game once the half hour expired.

The Scorpions will travel to Tampa Bay next weekend to take on the Rowdies, while Edmonton will take on the New York Cosmos.
