FC Edmonton News Release
San Antonio, TX (October 13, 2013) - FC Edmonton travelled to San Antonio looking for their second straight win to take on the Scorpions in what would be a very wet 90 minutes.
Field conditions would play a big part in the first few minutes as both teams were trying to get their touches right with the damp pitch surface. The Eddies defense was tested in the 13th minute, as captain Albert Watson kept great defensive position to steal the ball away from the Scorpions striker. That same defense was called on again in the 16th minute, as midfielder Chris Nurse kept great position in front of the FCE net to block a great Scorpions opportunity inside the box.
FCE had their share of offensive opportunities, with five corner kicks in the first 45 minutes. However one non-corner kick opportunity came in the 26th minute, when Vancouver Whitecaps loaner/striker Corey Hertzog released a quick strike to the top right corner of the Scorpions goal, forcing keeper Jeremy Vuolo to make a diving save.
The 40th minute brought the first goal of the match. Scorpions striker Tomasz Zahorski deflected a good cross from Javier Saavedra to give the San Antonio squad the lead.
FCE's Massimo Mirabelli was subbed out for Anthony Adur in the 45th minute, as Mirabelli got an elbow in the chest and was unable to keep his breath.
As the second half began, FCE's Neil Hlavaty received the game's first yellow card in the 48th minute after a disagreement with officials. As things continued, the Scorpions began things by controlling the possession game for the first 10 minutes in the second half. The first Eddies offensive chance in the half came in the 58th minute, as Chris Nurse let a shot go from 25 yards out, but Scorpions keeper Vuolo was equal to the task.
In an effort to change the tempo of the game, Eddies coach Colin Miller made a substitution in the 77th minute, sending Edem Mortotsi in for Hlavaty. Hlavaty was the deliverer of many Eddies corners throughout the game, but no result came on the other end. A third substitution was then made for FCE as Robert Garrett came off for Antonio Rago.
Not long after, FCE's Eddie Edward received a straight red card on a hard challenge to Scorpions midfielder Pat Phelan. This left the Eddies down to 10 men with just under 10 minutes to play.
As the 90th minute came about, the head referee stopped the game because of a lightning flash in the sky. After a 30-minute delay, the game continued with three minutes of stoppage time left to play. Nothing was generated in the extra time, and as a result the match ended in a 1-0 win for the Scorpions.
The Eddies next game will be in Long Island as FCE visit the Cosmos for the first time on Sunday.
