Scorpions Draw 1-1 with the Fury at Toyota Field

October 4, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
San Antonio Scorpions News Release

The Scorpions held a 1-0 lead heading into the five minutes of second half stoppage time. San Antonio had controlled the action for much of the second half and kept the Fury from putting goalkeeper Josh Saunders under any real pressure until late in the match. But a series of corner kicks during that five minutes while the game clock read 90:00 created the opening Ottawa had been waiting for. Two straight point-blank chances were sent in on Saunders by the Fury, but the Oregon native parried away each. The defense was unable to get a much needed clear, though, and Ottawa fullback Ryan Richter jumped on the loose ball in the box and buried his chance into the far corner of the net to knot the game at 1.

The Scorpions had not scored a goal in the opening fifteen minutes of a match all season, but that changed in the 11' against the Fury. Rafael Castillo was knocked down by Ottawa winger Pierre-Rudolph Mayard about 35 yards from the Fury's goal to set up a San Antonio free kick. The Colombian midfielder sent in a left-footed shot towards the far post that went just past his teammates crashing the goal and bounced on the ground directly towards the open net. Ottawa goalie Romuald Peiser looked as if he expected a Scorpions player to get a head on the ball, and he was unable to react in time to reach to make the save when the ball went through the scrum in front of his area. The earliest goal of 2014 for San Antonio was also Castillo's fifth of the season.

San Antonio had numerous opportunities to find a second goal, with the best chance for what would have been a game-winner coming in the 71'. Walter Restrepo weaved his way through the Ottawa defense on the attacking right and created an opening for himself inside the 18-yard-box, but lost control of the ball when he tried to cut back to his left. Peiser had come off of his line and was unable to get full contact on his clearance attempt, which fell to Scorpions' midfielder Cesar Elizondo just outside the box. Elizondo tried to take advantage of Peiser's positioning and chipped the ball over his head towards the open goal, but Fury center back Mason Trafford covered for his 'keeper and headed the ball away from goal just before it crossed the line.

The Scorpions will be back at Toyota Field next Saturday to play the Tampa Bay Rowdies while Ottawa is on the road again to play the Cosmos in New York.
