ATLANTA, Georgia - The San Antonio Scorpions earned a hard fought point on the road Saturday night in a 3-3 draw with the Atlanta Silverbacks at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. Striker Omar Cummings scored two of the goals to push his NASL-leading total up to ten in 2015.
In the 81' with the Scorpions down 2-3 and pushing hard for an equalizer, Cummings came through in the clutch once again. Fullback (and fellow Jamaican) Stephen DeRoux started the play by sending Cummings into the Atlanta area with a beautiful ball over the top. Cummings took one very deft touch to his left to open space as the lone Silverbacks defender streaked out of position. Omar then curled a left-footed shot into the upper left corner of the frame that 'keeper Steward Ceus had no chance to stop. The goal was the tenth of the year for Cummings, which is three more than any other player in the league.
Things looked bleak for the Scorpions twelve minutes into the second half as the Silverbacks opened up a two-goal lead after the match had been tied 1-1 at the half. Junior Burgos connected on a wicked free kick in the 51' to put the Silverbacks up 2-1 and then Atlanta forward Jaime Chávez made it 3-1 in the 57th minute, but the Alamo City boys showed their fortitude and immediately fought back.
Rafael Castillo set up for a free kick towards the Scorpions' attacking left almost 40 yards from goal. The Colombian once again proved he can be clinical with his delivery from almost anywhere on the pitch as he found an unmarked Billy Forbes in the box and the Turks and Caicos international nodded the ball home for his third goal of the year to pull the red and black back within one and set up Cummings' heroics.
Atlanta opened the scoring in the 23rd minute of the first half when winger Kyle Porter sent in a cross that forward Pedro Mendes was able to redirect past Scorpions goalie Matt Cardone. But only two minutes later, Cummings answered when a mishit ball on a Silverbacks clearance dropped right into the striker's path and he made the defense pay by heading the ball in to tie the game at 1-1.
Next week, the Scorpions travel to New York City to play the Spring Season champion Cosmos while Atlanta will be on the road at the Jacksonville Armada. The next Scorpions home match will be against the Armada on August 22 at Toyota Field.
