Scorpions Add MVP
March 29, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Yuma Scorpions News Release
The Yuma Scorpions of the Golden Baseball League have pulled off the biggest trade in their team history.
The Scorpions have acquired the 2009 GBL Player of the Year, Nelson Castro from the Calgary Vipers for future considerations.
Last season Castro led the Vipers to the league championship and led the league in batting, slugging, triples, and stolen bases and was second in the league in RBI and runs. The all-Independent league shortstop led the league in batting with a.410 mark. In addition, he led the league in Triples with 10, Stolen Bases with 33, Slugging Average at.646, and Hits with 123. He was second in the league with 81 RBI and 80 Runs Scored and also pounded out 11 HR which was just one off his all-time season high in spite of the fact he missed 14 games. He is considered one of the top defensive shortstops in the league and was key to the Vipers winning the 2009 GBL Championship. Castro was the Vipers Player of the Year in 2008 and a GBL All-Star each of the last three season. He also seems to get better with age, raising his average from.323 in 2007 to.336 in 2008 and to.410 in 2009. Castro, 33, was signed out of the Dominican Republic as a 17 year old by the California Angels in 1994. After six seasons in the low minors he was traded to the San Francisco Giants and excelled in their system reaching AAA and playing there for three years. He went on to play in the Boston and Milwaukee farm systems. He joined the Calgary Vipers in 2006 and during the 2007 season the resident of Lynn, MA became an American citizen.
He becomes the third former Vipers MVP to be acquired by Peter Young, the Scorpions V-P Baseball Operations and former Vipers president.
The Scorpions will be managed by 2007 Baseball America Player of the Year Darryl Brinkley and this past week signed multi-year all-star Carlos Duncan.
"Nellie is one of the elite players in all of Independent Baseball", said Young. "He's also one of the classiest players I've encountered in all of baseball and gives us a top rate middle infield along with Peeter Ramos. Seeing him and Carlos reunited will be good for baseball in Yuma".
The Scorpions will open training camp on May 8 and will hold an Open Tryout and Free Agent Camp on Saturday, May 1 at Desert Sun Stadium.
