July 20, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release

[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]- The New Mexico Scorpions, proud member of the Central Hockey League (CHL), continue to build their young nucleus with the signing of forward Billy Hengen. Head Coach Ray Edwards continues to fill his roster with some great talent from the NCAA.

Hengen joins the Scorpions after four successful seasons at St. Cloud State. The Eden Prairie, Minn. native played 119 games for the Huskies registering 79 points (24G, 55A). His 55 assists rank 22nd in school history.

"Billy is a very unselfish player who has great vision," said Edwards. "With his skill set, he should be successful creating offense at this level. He is a player that makes other players on the ice better."

The Scorps' roster continues to build with a mixture of youth and experience that will be counted on to provide exciting and winning hockey here in New Mexico. In the coming weeks Coach Edwards will continue to sign more players that will add to the already electrifying roster.

"This will be a great experience for me to start my professional career. I talked to Coach Edwards for 90 minutes and decided to turn down an offer in Europe and instead play for the Scorpions," said Hengen. "The new Santa Ana Star Center is a big draw for a player. Getting to play in a great facility makes it a lot more fun to play hockey."

In Hengen's senior season for the Huskies, he set career highs in goals (9), assists (23), points (32), shots (99) and plus/minus (+15). The 5'9", 175-pounder scored two goals and one assist in the WCHA quarterfinals upset of Minnesota-Duluth. One night later he duplicated those numbers as St. Cloud upset then top ranked University of Minnesota in the WCHA semifinals.

"Every year you look for that one player to really surprise you with their skills," said Edwards. "You have to have young players step up and surprise you, and we think we have a few young guys that can and will do that."
