Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns "Scoreboard Cowboy" has ridden off into the sunset after choosing to retire after two seasons of entertaining fans and operating the Suns manual left-field scoreboard. The door is open for a new charismatic individual to take over the reins.
"Good riddance," said Suns President & General Manager Kurt Landes. "How many times can one listen to Cotton Eyed Joe over the course of a season? Plus, he scared me sometimes - kind of like how Jack Palance did in the movie City Slickers."
The new scoreboard operator will be asked to work the majority of the Suns 70 home games. The season runs from April - September and includes some weekend and holiday games. On April 10th, the Suns will face the Lakewood Blue Claws in their home opener. Although the position will once again be a character, Suns officials have not announced what the character might be.
"When our last Scoreboard Operator walked into our job fair we knew right away that he was destined to be a cowboy," said Suns Senior Director of Marketing, CJ Johnson. "We hope that the individuals that come to the try-outs this season will have the same type of energy that makes the development of a character simple. I'm sure the new scoreboard operator's unique talents will help us determine what type of character he or she becomes."
All applicants must have a basic understanding of baseball rules and procedure and must be willing to perform at least one crowd-pleasing skit per game.
To apply for the position, or for any part-time summer job with the Suns, stop by the Suns front office and pick-up an application as soon as possible. All interested applicants in the Scoreboard Operator position must attend a try-out session at the Valley Mall Food Court on Saturday, March 18th at 10:00 a.m. Suns employees are required to be 16 years of age. All additional information can be obtained by calling the Suns front office at 301-791-6266.
The Hagerstown Suns are the Class-A affiliate of the New York Mets. The Suns are owned by Los Angeles based Mandalay Baseball Properties.
