Scorchers fall in second match-up with the Sirens

Sacramento Sirens News Release

The Scorchers first kick-off to the Sirens was an onside boot of only a few yards in an attempt to keep the ball away from Running Back #22 Julie Wicher who devastated the Scorchers with a pair of kick-off returns for TDs in the last game. Still Coming on strong from the first second of the game, the Sirens starting Quarterback, #11 Leilani Limary threw a 31-yd Touchdown pass to Running Back #21 Hilary McLaughlin for the first score of the game. The Scorchers drove back but were held to a field goal by the Sirens defense. Despite another onside kick, the Sirens followed up with another TD on a 15-yard run by Fullback #36 Dana "D-Train" McIntyre to end the first quarter with a score of Sirens 12 – Scorchers 3.

The Sirens offense dominated the 2nd quarter scoring at will for four TDs in that period of play. Running Back #23 Michelle Kahler scored on a breakaway run of 44-yards followed by a pair of passing scores. Limary popped a short pass to #83 Courtney Brazil and on the next drive tossed a beautiful 49-yarder to Rookie Tight End, #82 Sarah Trobee. Despite the Scorchers efforts, "Wicked" Julie Wicher got her hands on the ball for a 33-yard run to score at the end of the second. The score at the half was Sirens 36 – Scorchers 3.

In anticipation of a tough home game match up this week against the Oakland Banshees, the Sirens Offensive Coordinator Ron Brown chose to put in Rookie QB #14 Vanessa Davis for the second half. Davis showed her mettle with a pair of great passes of 39- and 34-yards but the Sirens were denied a score in the third due to a callback penalty on a rushing TD. The officials in this instance failed to indicate what infraction was made; they simply took the ball out of the end zone and replaced it at the 15-yard line, refusing Sacramento the score. The Sirens awesome defense led by #40 Rocket Hazelton did a fantastic job and held the Scorchers scoreless in the 3rd as well. The score remained Sirens 36-Scorchers 3.

Suffering with the worst officiating in their 2-year history, the Sirens pushed Santa Rosa back to the 3-yd line before tackling their QB #9 Bagley for what should have been a Safety. Instead, the officials spotted the ball at the back of the end zone and allowed the Scorchers to punt out to the Sirens. When asked by Sirens Head Coach David Gray on what yard line the ball had been placed, the official questioned said he didn't know and let the play continue... Near the end of the 4th, the Scorchers scored on a pass play to end the game with a score of Sirens 36-Scorchers 9.

The Sirens have asked for an official review of the game tapes by the Northern Valley Football Officials Association and the Independent Women's Football League but will not contest the outcome of the game.
