
Sirens Shake Quake and Win Pacific Southwest Division Championship

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (May 10, 2003) â The Sacramento Sirens, Sacramento's professional women's full tackle football team, defeated the California Quake today by a final score of 67 â 14 and won the Independent Women's Football League's Pacific Southwest Division. The undefeated Sirens with a record of 8 â 0 continue their winning ways and bring home another championship to the Sacramento area.
After forcing the Quake to punt on their first possession, the Sirens scored on a 6 yard run by QB Channel Powers. K Hilary McLaughlin's kick was good and with 9:58 remaining in the first, the score was 7 â 0 Sirens. The Sirens defense held the Quake to turn the ball over on downs but quickly lost it on a offensive fumble to return the ball to the Quake. The Quake failed to convert and were forced to punt the ball back to the Sirens. On the following play, QB Leilani Limary kept the ball herself for a 11 yard touchdown run. McLaughlin's kick failed and the score at the end of the first quarter was 13 â 0 Sirens.
In the second quarter, the Sirens forced the Quake offense to turn the ball over on downs allowing HB Julie Wicher to score on a 3 yard run. The Sirens' two-point conversion failed and the score remained 19 â 0. The Sirens defense pressured the Quake to punt the ball back to the Sirens but an interception by the Quake lead to a 48 yard run by Quake DB Stephanie Neroes. The Quake's two-point conversion failed bringing the score to 19 â 6. On the following drive, the Sirens offense drove down the field and an 11 yard pass from Limary to TE Sarah Trobee combined with a McLaughlin point after kick ended the half with a score of 26 â 6.
In the third quarter, two interceptions and one point led to the only scoring of the quarter: a 9 yard and 3 yard runs by Wicher and a 50 yard run by LB Joyce Brown. All three point after kicks were good to raise the score to 47 â 6 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Sirens continued their domination with three more touchdowns: a 1 yard run by FB Lisa Giblin, a 48 yard run by Wicher and a 9 yard run by Limary. Two of the three kicks by Stoner were good. The Quaker managed to score one more time with 10:44 remaining in the quarter on a 7 yard run by CB Colleen Rhemm. After the two point conversion, the final score was 67 â 14 Sirens.

The Sirens travel to the California Quake next weekend in Long Beach who look to avenge this loss. The Sirens will host game one of the playoffs scheduled for June 14 at Capital Christian High School.
