Florida Fire Frogs News Release
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Florida Fire Frogs opened up a three-game series with an 8-2 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays on Tuesday night at Osceola County Stadium. The Fire Frogs' pitching staff tied a team record with 11 walks on the night, while Brett Cumberland tied a season-high with three walks at the plate.
Cumberland (1x2, 3 BB) extended his on-base streak to 10 games with a two-out single in the first. The switch hitter then drew free passes in his next three at-bats, before striking out against Ty Tice (SV, 2) to end the game.
Dunedin (20-30) plated three runs against Jeremy Walker (1-4) in the third to take the early advantage. The right-handed pitcher walked three men in the frame, gave up just two hits, with two of the runs scoring on RBI groundouts.
John La Prise started the third with a triple to the gap in right-center, and came home to score on a ground out from Ivan Castillo. After three consecutive walks to Eduard Pinto, Nash Knight and Kevin Smith, Bradley Jones brought home a run with a single to right to put Florida (21-26) in a two-run deficit. Kacy Clemens followed with an RBI groundout to second to plate the third run of the third.
The Fire Frogs crawled within two with a run in the fifth, without the benefit of a hit. Marcus Mooney (0x3, R, BB) started things out with a free pass and moved up to second on a wild pitch from Zach Logue to Cristian Pache (1x5). After Alejandro Salazar (1x5, RBI) struck out, Cumberland drew his second walk of the game to keep the inning alive for Jared James (0x3, BB).
The left-handed batter rolled one out to second, but La Prise throw to the pitcher covering first sailed well wide of the target and made its way to the wall behind home plate, allowing Mooney to score on the play.
The Blue Jays pushed across two more runs in the seventh against Mauricio Cabrera, who walked four batters in the inning while recording just one out. Thomas Burrows came on with the bases loaded and struck out La Prise and Castillo to lift the damage.
The road team broke the game open with a three-spot in the ninth to put the hosts behind by seven.
Salazar brought home Mooney with a groundout to second for the Fire Frogs final run of the night.
Garrison Schwartz (1x4) pushed his team-leading hitting streak to 12 games with a single to center in the fourth inning, and Pache extending his streak to seven with an infield hit in the last frame.
The combination of Walker (4), Cabrera (4) and Burrows (3) tied a team record with 11 walks on the night, matching the previous mark set earlier this month against the Tampa Tarpons on May 11 at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Jon Kennedy worked two scoreless frames and picked up a strikeout, while Troy Bacon allowed all three inherited runners to score in the ninth in 0.2 innings.
Connor Eller (2-2) earned his second win of the season with 1.1 innings of relief of Logue on Tuesday. The right-handed reliever did not allow any base runners, and struck out a man for the winning effort.
Florida will look to even up the three-game series in the middle game on Wednesday night at Osceola County Stadium. LHP Tucker Davidson (3-4, 5.85) will take the mound for the Fire Frogs against the Blue Jays' LHP Tayler Saucedo (3-2, 4.21). First pitch is scheduled for 6:31 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:15 p.m. with the Florida Fire Frogs Pregame Show on the Florida Fire Frogs Broadcasting Network.
