Schooners Sweep Way into NECBL Championship Series
GROTON "" The Mystic Schooners completed the sweep of the Newport Gulls and head into the NECBL Championship for the first time.
The Newport Gulls struck first for two runs but that is all they would get. Jesse Lepore shut the rest of the Gulls down going six innings and only giving up six hits while striking out six batters.
The Schooners would come right back and tie the game at two in the bottom half of the first. Ben Ruta worked a four-pitch walk that gave the Schooners their first base runner of the game. With two outs Dan Hoy put the meat of the bat on the ball and sent one over the left center field fence for his the teams first home run of the game.
In the very next inning the Schooners struck for two more. Jesse Berardi led the inning off with a single and Aaron Hill walked to move Berardi into scoring position. John Brucker then worked the count full and hit a sharp ground ball through the right side of the infield to bring the go ahead run across the plate and the Schooners never looked back.
Derek Jenkins then reached on a fielder's choice and Ben Ruta walked to load the bases for Rich Slenker. Slenker hit a routine ball to the Newport shortstop Sabino who made a lazy play that Slenker beat out. With the infield hit, Aaron Hill scored from third base to make the score 4-2 after two innings.
The Schooners offensive attack kept coming in the third. With two outs Aaron Hill walked for the second straight at-bat for John Brucker who ripped one to right center and brought Hill in. Then Derek Jenkins did the same thing to bring in Brucker. With Jenkins standing on second the hottest man in the playoffs Nick Mascelli sent a two run homer over the left field fence to put the Schooners up 8-2 after three innings.
Dan Hoy was not happy with just one home run. To lead off the fourth he hit a bomb over the same part of the fence he did earlier to give the Schooners nine runs on the night. It was the third home run for Mystic in the game and Hoy's seventh on the season.
Hoy came through once again in the sixth, he got on with a base hit and stole second base. A Lou Ionatti single got Hoy to third and a wild pitch from Brendan Spagnuolo allowed the tenth run to score.
The seventh inning saw two more runs cross the plate. With one out Derek Jenkins took first base on a walk, then CJ Moore who was a pinch hitter screamed a triple down the right field line to score Jenkins from first. And Ben Ruta doubled to right and CJ strolled across the plate to make the score 12-2.
The Schooners added four more runs in the eighth to complete the 16-2 thumping. The home team scored in every inning except the fifth and have gone undefeated through the first two rounds of the playoffs.
The Schooners will face either the Vermont Mountaineers or the North Adams SteepleCats in the NECBL Championship starting on Sunday. They will get a home field advantage no matter whom they play.
