Scholarship foundation formed for Blizzard
December 2, 2006 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Alexandria Blizzard News Release
An innovative initiative is afoot in the Junior "A" Central Division of the NAHL. Supporters of the Alexandria Blizzard hockey players, independently of team management and ownership, recently formed a scholarship foundation which is aptly named "The I.C.E. Foundation." The foundation is named for its purpose -- Investing in College Education. It is a non-profit organization formed to provide academic scholarships and developmental funds to past and present Blizzard players.
The newly organized Foundation was established in an effort to assure that Blizzard hockey players have the means to attend the colleges of their choice. Although most of the players look forward to scholarship dollars through the colleges and universities they choose to attend, very often a gap exists between athletic scholarship funds, financial aid and/or student loans, and the rising costs of college tuition. There are four principals named in the Foundation's Articles of Organization. Their goal is to add eight additional members to its Board of Directors, including two Blizzard alumni players. Thereafter, the Foundation will strive to accumulate scholarship funds through grants, donations and fundraisers, and to distribute those funds through a scholarship application process.
The Foundation is in the process of applying for their tax-exempt status and attending to registration requirements of the Minnesota Attorney General. They hope to have information regarding donations posted on the Blizzard webite by mid-January.
