January 20, 2023 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Maine Nordiques News Release
The Maine Nordiques we're taking on the Maryland Black bears riding a four-game skid.
The first period started with the Nordiques being hungry and striking first as Top Prospect, Henrik Hallberg, found the back of the net to make it 1-0. The Black Bears would head to a power-play and get it back to tie it and add another to make it 2-1. The Nordiques kept up their battle and Jonny Meiers would strike on the power-play to tie it and Filip Wiberg would add another to give the Nords a 3-2 lead after the first period.
The second period started with Jonny Meiers striking again on the power play and gave the Nords a 4-2 advantage. The Black Bears would change their goalie and go on the attack. The Bears would respond midway through the period to make it 4-3. Tommy Heaney who finished with 39/44 saves in net came up big and the Nords held on after two periods of play.
The third period started with the Black Bears looking to strike, it took a power play for them to do so, but they did and made it a tied game. With both teams playing tight in the neutral zone and tempers heating up, the Nords went to the man advantage and Adian Coupe buried a one-timer to give the Nords the lead. The Black Bears however would respond on the next shift. This game would need overtime.
The Black Bears controlled the puck early and put pressure on Tommy Heaney who came up big in net in overtime. The Nordiques got back-to-back offense zone faceoffs and Filip Wiberg won a draw back to Bernardo who gave it to Wiberg who won a boards battle against two Black Bears and found Schmedlin in front who put it home on the backhand and ended the game. 6-5 Nords win and pick up their first two points of 2023.
Game two is tomorrow at 7pm, where the Nords will host first responders night.
