Schedule announced for CBA's 59th season
Published on July 20, 2004 under Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1) News Release
Boise, ID (July 20, 2004) â The oldest professional basketball league in the world will begin its 59th consecutive season on Friday, November 19, as the Continental Basketball Association tips off the 2004-05 campaign with eight games scheduled for opening weekend.
The eight-team league will be divided into the Eastern (Gary, Great Lakes, Michigan, and Rockford) and Western (Dakota, Idaho, Sioux Falls, and Yakima) Conferences, and play a total of 192 regular season games. The 16-week season concludes on Sunday, March 13, and the 2005 CBA Playoffs commence on Tuesday, March 15. The fan-friendly schedule features 44 percent of its games played on Friday (45) and Saturday (37) nights.
"When faced with the task of building a regular season schedule each year, the League tries to achieve four basic goals," stated Deputy Commissioner Wade Morehead. "We strive to maximize weekend date submissions, minimize travel costs, maintain competitive integrity with a fair matrix of opponents, and design a player-friendly schedule guaranteeing an energetic product every game."
The season officially launches when the expansion Michigan Mayhem welcomes the Great Lakes Storm to the L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon, Michigan, as the two Michigan-based teams fight for state supremacy. The opening night docket also features the Idaho Stampede and new Head Coach Joe Wolf traveling to Yakima to face the Sun Kings in the Yakima Valley SunDome. The game marks the return of Sun Kings Head Coach Paul Woolpert, who led the franchise to their second CBA title in 2000 and possesses an 89-71 (.556) record as the team's headman (1998 â 2001).
The defending champion Dakota Wizards begin their 2003-04 title defense Friday night as well, hosting the Sioux Falls Skyforce at the Bismarck Civic Center in Bismarck, North Dakota. After coaching the Wizards to the best regular season record in each of the past three seasons, and winning two Jay Ramsdell Trophies during that span (2001-02 and 2003-04 CBA Champions), Dave Joerger and Casey Owens will now be sitting on opposite benches. Joerger, the former head coach of the Wizards who won two CBA Coach of the Year Awards (2002 and 2004), will make his debut leading the Sioux Falls Skyforce in his fourth CBA season as head coach, while Owens will continue to roam the sidelines in Bismarck, but now as the first-year head coach of the Wizards.
On Saturday, November 20, the league features a full schedule of games as all eight teams take to the court. In Gary, Indiana, expect a packed Genesis Center crowd to cheer third-year Head Coach Duane Ticknor as he guides the Steelheads against regional-rival Rockford Lightning, led by 2002-03 CBA Coach of the Year Chris Daleo. Last season, the Steelhead faithful packed the Genesis Center to record the top two attended games of the 2003-04 CBA campaign. On November 14, a crowd of 5,823 fans attended the season home opener against Rockford, while the regular season concluded when the same two rivals battled in front of a CBA season-high 6,202 fans on March 6.
The first rematch of the 2004 CBA Finals will take place on Friday, December 3, as the Stampede face the Wizards in Bismarck, ND. On January 18 and 19, the Gary Steelheads will host the 21st CBA All-Star Classic, which features the Long Distance Shootout, the Slam Dunk Competition, and the CBA All-Star Game.
Due to the turnstile success that Sioux Falls has had on its annual Christmas-night game and the success of Dakota's New Year's Eve game, the CBA will again be active during the holiday season. Sioux Falls hosts Idaho in its traditional Christmas evening showdown, while the Mayhem begins a holiday tradition of its own hosting Great Lakes. Later that week, 2004 will be sent out in style with three New Year's Eve games on Friday, December 31: Rockford travels to Great Lakes; the Mayhem play at Gary; and the Wizards host Sioux Falls. The Sun Kings and Mayhem then tip-off 2005 in Muskegon on Saturday, January 1, in the first of two New Year's Day games, followed by Gary at the Rockford MetroCentre.
