Sasquat'ch takes a beating in Vermont

February 1, 2009 - Premier Basketball League (PBL)
Montreal Sasquatch News Release

(Barre, Vt)-Montreal took a third beating this season to the hands of the Vermont Frost Heaves, this time 78-103 in Barre, Vermont.

After a stellar performance in Quebec city last night, Montreal just didn't delivered defensively against the Frost Heaves who walked away with another easy win. Fatigue certainly was a factor in the game as the Montreal players merely enjoyed five hours of sleep between last night's game and their faceoff against the Frost Heaves.

After a slow start, Randy «White Chocolate» Gill hit three consecutive three pointers to bring Montreal within two points of Vermont (24-26). Unfortunately for the Sasquat'ch, this would be Gill's only points of the game. Vermont closed out the first quarter with a 10 points priority (24-34).

Joe Nixon had the hot hand in the second quarter for Vermont, hitting for three pointers to extend the home team lead to 37-54. Jamaal Wise and LP Levros answered for Montreal, but it's more the comedy of errors and missed shots from the Frost Heaves that allowed the visitors to stay in the game. Both teams headed to the locker room with Vermont holding a comfortable 42-55 lead.

Montreal tried to make a game out of it in the third quarter coming within 10 points of the Frost Heaves (49-59), but Vermont took the control back quickly. At some point, the home team scored 10 unanswered points to put the game out of reach for Montreal. After three quarters, Vermont held a commanding 28 points lead (56-84).

Despite some interesting sequences in the last period of the game, Montreal could not rally back from such a huge deficit. For the third time this season, Vermont hammered the Sasquat'ch by more than 20 points, winning this one 78-103.

Bench support

Story of the game can be summarize by looking at the contribution from the bench of both teams: 50 points for Vermont compare to only 19 for Montreal. It means that without a nearly perfect game from their starting five, the Sasquat'ch will have a tough time getting victories if the bench doesn't start to produce.

After the game, Montreal's head coach Alejandro Hasbani acknowledged that fatigue was certainly a factor in today's result.

«The schedule is very demanding. I don't play and I was tired, so imagine the players who played hard today, explained the coach after the game. We faced a very good team today. Vermont held nothing back and they clearly deserve the victory.»

For Montreal, LP Levros lead all scorers of the game with 19 points. Jamaal Wise added 12 while Xavier Morton had 11 points to go with his 10 rebounds. Closely guard by Thomas Sanders, Randy «White Chocolate» Gill had his worst game of the season scoring only nine points.

On the Vermont side, Brandon Cole lead his team with 17 points while Joe Nixon hit key three pointers to finish the game with 15 points.

With the loss, Montreal falls to 3-5 on the season. On the other side, the victory allows Vermont to reclaim a share of the lead in the Atlantic division with a 6-3 record. After defeating Halifax earlier today, Manchester also has a 6-3 record.

After a week of training, the Sasquat'ch will renew with their fans Friday night on February 6th when the Quebec Kebs will in town for the first time this season. The game is scheduled to start at 19h30.

The following night (February 7th) will see the Detroit Panthers visit Montreal on an out of division match up. The game will also start at 19h30.
