Sanger to Handle Net Duties for Icemen

October 2, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Indianapolis Ice News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN-- The Indianapolis Ice announced today that the team has received goaltender Jeff Sanger from the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League as part of the team's recent affiliation agreement with the Chicago Blackhawks and Norfolk.

Sanger, 24, made his pro debut last season with the Reading Royals of the East Coast Hockey League and was the team's top netminder. He recorded a 20-12-4 record, 3.63 goals-against-average and one shutout in 40 games of work. His ECHL play went recognized as he also earned a call-up last year to Manchester (AHL) where he saw action in four games going 1-1-1 with a 3.48 GAA.

"I watched Jeff play the last few days in Norfolk and he's definitely a goaltender with great potential," said Ice Head Coach Ken McRae. "He had a solid rookie season in the "Coast" (East Coast Hockey League) and his collegiate success speaks for itself. I look for this to be a breakthrough year for Jeff who is hungry to move up the hockey ladder.

Before turning pro, Sanger played four record-setting years for the Colorado College Tigers of the West Coast Hockey Association (NCAA Division One). He was the number one netminder for the Tigers in all four of his seasons at the school and finished his collegiate years with a remarkable 76-45-4 record, 2.50 GAA to go along with 16 shutouts.

Tigers' record books are etched with Sanger's name as he remains the university's all-time leader in career wins (76), shutouts in a season (7) and career shutouts (16). His senior year also brought him glory in hockey's version of the "Sweet 16" as his 2-0 shutout of perennial hockey powerhouse Michigan State remains the Colorado College's last playoff shutout and got the Tigers that season to the quarterfinals of the 2002 NCAA Tournament.

Sanger and the rest of the Ice players will begin reporting for training camp on Monday, October 6th, but will not take the ice until the afternoon of Wednesday, October 8th. The team's home opener is Saturday, October 18th when the team hosts the Shreveport Mudbugs at 7:00 p.m. from the Pepsi Coliseum.
