Sand Gnats Creep Past BlueClaws 3-2

Savannah Sand Gnats News Release


SAVANNAH, GA – The Savannah Sand Gnats (17-21) crept past the Lakewood BlueClaws (14-25) tonight 3-2 at Historic Grayson Stadium. Frank Diaz was 4 for 4 with a double and a RBI to lead the Sand Gnats. Reggie Fitzpatrick was 3 for 3 with four stolen bases. The Sand Gnats grabbed the lead in the third inning. With one out Fitzpatrick reached on a bunt single to first base and stole second. After Tim Sweeney grounded out to third, Larry Broadway hit a hard ground ball that ricocheted off of the umpire for a single. Left fielder Chad Chop then laced a single to center field that was mishandled by BlueClaw centerfielder Andre Marshall. The ball would roll all the way to the wall allowing both runs to score and allowing Chop to go to third. Shawn Norris then walked, bringing up Diaz. Diaz would drive Chop home on a solid single to left field giving the Sand Gnats the 3-2 advantage. The BlueClaws first run came in the top of the second on a solo home run to left field by Mark McRoberts, his sixth of the season. Lakewood scored their second run in the third inning after Chris Roberson reached on a fielder's choice and scored later on a wild pitch. Sand Gnat starter Mike Hinckley (3-1) pitched six innings allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, picking up the victory. Danny Rueckel pitched three scoreless innings earning his second save of the season. Chop was 1 for 4 with a run scored and a RBI. At the plate for the BlueClaws, left fielder Rod Perry was 3 for 3 with a triple. Zack Segovia (1-5) took the loss after pitching five innings allowing seven hits and three runs. The Sand Gnats will play the final game of a four game series against the BlueClaws tomorrow night with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm. Tomorrow is Thirsty Thursday presented by Connect Savannah and Rock 106.1. All beverages are half price and Papa Johns pizza slices are $1 a slice. Thursday is also SCAD Night and Port Wentworth Night.
