San Jose SaberCats News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. (July 13, 2002) – San Jose SaberCats quarterback Mark Grieb, the Arena Football League's passer rating leader and a top candidate for Offensive Player of the Year honors, will miss the final regular season game and the playoffs after sustaining a fractured right clavicle in the SaberCats 59-52 loss at Arizona on Friday night, the team announced today.

Grieb (6-3, 205, UC Davis) suffered the injury late in the third quarter when Rattlers lineman Stacy Evans charged unabated and threw him to the turf. Grieb lay on the turf for several minutes before being helped to the locker room. The SaberCats were flagged for a false start on the play while Evans and the Rattlers were not penalized.

Dr. Arthur Ting, the SaberCats team physician, examined Grieb today and will re-evaluate the 28-year-old quarterback on Monday.

Before the injury Grieb had completed 15 of 24 passes for 254 yards and six touchdowns to establish San Jose single-season records for passing yards and completions.

John Dutton, who started the first eight games of the 2001 season for the SaberCats, replaced Grieb and led the SaberCats to the game-tying touchdown and 2-point conversion before San Jose succumbed ending their league record 12-game win streak.

The SaberCats will sign a backup for Dutton early next week.
