Giants Begin Three-Game Series Against Visalia Tonight

The San Jose Giants open a six-game homestand this evening with the first of three straight contests against the Visalia Rawhide at Municipal Stadium. Luis Ysla is slated to make the start on the mound for San Jose tonight. Over his last five appearances (three starts), Ysla has fashioned a 1.21 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 22 1/3 innings. After the current series versus Visalia, the Giants continue their homestand with a three-game set against the Lancaster JetHawks beginning on Friday.

Road Trip Review

The Giants posted a 3-4 record on their road trip that concluded last Sunday. San Jose began the trip by taking two out of three games in Modesto. It marked only the Giants' second road series win of the season (both against the Nuts). San Jose then dropped three out of four to the Lake Elsinore Storm with two of the losses coming in extra innings.

Lost Four Of Five

The Giants enter this evening's contest having lost four out of their last five games after going 21-6 in their previous 27 games.

League-Leading Pitching Staff

San Jose now boasts the lowest team ERA in the California League (3.49). The Giants are also second in the league in strikeouts (1078) and shutouts (10) - trailing Visalia in both categories. San Jose owns a 2.21 team ERA (76 ER/309.2 IP) in their last 32 games (22-10 record).

In The Standings

San Jose (26-17) is currently in a three-way tie for first place in the second half North Division standings with Modesto (26-17) and Visalia (26-17). The Giants have not held sole possession of first place in the division at any point this season. San Jose (56-57) is also one game behind Stockton (57-56) for the North Division Wild Card lead. 27 games remain in the regular season. The Giants have posted a league-record 11 consecutive winning seasons (2004-2014).

At Muni

The Giants are 13-2 in their last 15 home games. San Jose has allowed two runs or fewer in 11 out of their last 15 games at Municipal Stadium. The Giants haven't lost a home series since dropping two out of three to Visalia from July 4-6.

Christian Arroyo

Shortstop Christian Arroyo currently ranks fifth in the California League with a .315 batting average. Arroyo hit his seventh home run of the season in last Saturday's game while he's second on the team with 22 doubles. Arroyo hit .300 in the first half (27 games) and owns a .325 batting average in the second half (39 games).

Struggling Offense

Over their last 13 games, the Giants are batting only .208 as a team and averaging 3.3 runs per contest. San Jose is ninth in the California League this season in runs scored (4.4 per game).

Dominant Bullpen

Since the beginning of July, the Giants bullpen has fashioned a stellar 1.89 ERA. Jake Smith (T8th, 100) and Ian Gardeck (T17th, 88) are the only two relievers in the California League to rank among the top 20 in strikeouts. Second half ERA's of San Jose relievers: Gardeck (2.35), Jones (1.99), Rogers (1.05), Slania (4.00), Smith (1.38) and Soptic (1.98). San Jose is the lone team in the league to have not lost a game this season when leading after eight innings (47-0).

Trouble With The Rawhide

The Giants are only 3-13 against Visalia this season (53-44 versus the rest of the league), including a 1-5 mark at Municipal Stadium. San Jose has yet to post a series win against the Rawhide this year.

Extra, Extra

With last Thursday's 15-inning marathon and Friday's 13-inning contest in Lake Elsinore, the Giants have now played 19 extra-inning games this season (9-10 record) - second-most in all of Minor League Baseball (Fort Myers Miracle of the Florida State League have played 21). San Jose has now played nine games this year that have gone 12 innings or longer. The Giants have lost their last four extra-inning games - all in the last 13 days.

Aramis Garcia Joins Giants

Catcher Aramis Garcia joined the Giants from Augusta (A) last Friday. Garcia is 3-for-8 (three singles) over his first two games with San Jose. A second round pick in the 2014 draft, Garcia was batting .273 with team-leading totals of 15 home runs and 61 RBI's in 83 games for the GreenJackets this season. He owned a .336 batting average for Augusta in the second half.

Opponent Notes: Visalia Rawhide

The Visalia Rawhide, an affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, own the best overall record in the league (68-45) and have already clinched a playoff berth after winning the first half North Division title - their first since 1990. Visalia is fifth in the league in batting average (.261) and second in ERA (3.58).
