San Jose Giants announce 2004 roster

April 5, 2004 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release

Following the San Francisco Giants final roster moves, the San Jose Giants unveiled their Opening Day roster for the 2004 season. The unit will be led by manager Lenn Sakata, who returns for a third stint in San Jose, pitching coach Trevor Wilson and hitting coach Gary Davenport. Davenport has replaced former major leaguer F.P. Santangelo who was unable to return for a second season due to family matters.

The 2004 San Jose Giants roster includes 10 players who have called Municipal Stadium home in previous seasons. Returning from the 2003 San Jose Giants roster are five pitchers (Brian Burres, Josh Cram, James Garcia, Anthony Pannone, and Brion Treadway), three infielders (Julian Benavidez, Julio Cordido, and Aaron Sobieraj) and two outfielders (Zach Strong and Dan Trumble). Garcia was the Giants representative on the 2003 California League All-Star team. Other notable players returning to San Jose include Trumble, who is third on the San Jose Giants career home run list with 36. Relief pitchers Cram and Burres are expected to be key contributors out of the bullpen. Burres was second among pitchers on the team in appearances (39) during the 2003 season, while Treadway hopes to continue the success he enjoyed in 2003 when he lead the team in wins (8).

Two notable names on the roster are a pair of the San Francisco Giants top choices from the 2002 First Year Player Draft . Both right-handed pitcher Matt Cain and outfielder Fred Lewis, are set to make their debut with San Jose. Cain was selected with the 25th overall pick of the 2002 draft after being named the Gatorade Tennessee High School Player of the Year during his senior season at Houston High School in Germantown, TN. Lewis was taken with San Francisco¹s next selection (66th overall) after finishing third in the Southwestern Conference with a .406 AVG (67-for-165) for Southern University. Both of the prospects spent their first full professional season with the Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic League.

A total of 13 other players will be making their first appearance for the San Jose Giants this spring, including two members of the 2003 Northwest League All-Star team. Catcher Todd Jennings and infielder/outfielder Brad Vericker were both named for the honor after ranking among the league leaders in a variety of offensive categories. Bay Area native Brian Stirm is also set to make his California League debut. The 22-year old right-handed pitcher, who was born in San Jose and now resides in Saratoga, CA, posted an 8-5 record with a 2.86 ERA (27 ER/85.0 IP) for the Hagerstown Suns last season.

The team is scheduled to arrive early Monday morning and will get right to work with practices on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings. The team opens their California League schedule in four days versus the Visalia Oaks on Thursday, April 8th. San Jose Giants fans are invited to attend these practices that will be held at Municipal Stadium.
