San Diego Spirit Match Preview v Boston
July 9, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
San Diego Spirit News Release
The Spirit has never lost to Boston, but San Diego must win their first road match of the season to keep pace with the Breakers. San Diego can hurdle over Boston in the standings with a victory on Wednesday. Spirit midfielder Jenny Mascaro, who returned to action after fracturing her foot, remained in San Diego for continuing rehabilitation. The Breakers boast perhaps the most dangerous attacking combination in the WUSA with forwards Dagny Mellgren, MVP candidate Maren Meinert, Kristine Lilly and attacking midfielder Bettina Wiegmann. If the Spirit can stall that potent attack, and exploit what has been a somewhat suspect Breakers defense, they may be able to get back on track.
BREAKERS NOTES...
· Kristine Lilly tallied two goals and one assist on Saturday, her first two-goal game of her WUSA career.
· Maren Meinert had a goal and an assist on Saturday to place her second in the league with 22 points.
· Karina LeBlanc's 57 saves rank second in the WUSA.
· With a 2-0-4 record at home, Boston is one of only two WUSA teams (Philadelphia) that has not lost at home.
· The Breakers have scored a league-high seven of their 24 goals in the first 15 minutes of play.
· Boston's defense is ranked sixth in the league with a 1.79 GAA.
