San Antonio Scorpions News Release

NEW YORK, New York (Saturday, May 23, 2015) - The San Antonio Scorpions fell 0-3 to New York for their first loss to the Cosmos since 2013.

The New York Cosmos entered the meeting of the last two North American Soccer League(NASL) champions with the stingiest defense in the league through the first seven weeks of the Spring Season. NYC played as advertised at Shuart Stadium on the campus of Hofstra University Saturday night as they kept the Scorpions offense in check all evening and ultimately handed the red and black their first shutout since last October in Indianapolis, ending a span of 10 straight matches where the Scorpions scored at least one goal.

The Cosmos' first goal came through one of the top five scorers in UEFA Champions League history. Raúl cooly slotted home a penalty kick in the 18', but Lucky Mkosana deserved the credit for earning a foul in the box. The early goal would stand through the first half, but in the second frame the Scorpions began to find their offensive rhythm. A sequence starting in the 48' saw San Antonio earn a free kick in dangerous territory and then create a subsequent corner, but the visitors couldn't capitalize on either opportunity.

In the 76th minute. Striker Omar Cummings drove hard towards the Cosmos endline and fired at New York 'keeper Maurer from a harsh angle, earning the Scorpions back-to-back corner kicks. But again, the red and black came up empty. Perhaps the best chance of the evening for Alamo City's own came in the 80th minute when Billy Forbes broke free on the left side of the New York 18-yard-box and sent a cross that eluded Maurer and tantalizingly rolled free through the six-yard-box, but with no Scorpions runner to hammer it home.

New York put the game away in a five-minute span starting in the 81' when defender Rovérsio finished a free kick from Ayoze. In the 86th minute, Spanish legend Raúl created the final goal when he crossed into the box and found Mkosona, who flicked on to Leornardo Fernandes for the goal.

Next week, the Scorpions play two at Toyota Field starting with Wednesday night's Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match against the Austin Aztex of the United Soccer League(USL). Then next Saturday, San Antonio hosts the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers in a rematch of last November's Championship Final.
