San Antonio's Marcina Voted Championship's Coach of the Month
September 9, 2020 - United Soccer League Championship (USL) News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - San Antonio FC's Alen Marcina has been voted the USL Championship's Coach of the Month for August, earning the award after leading his side to an undefeated record and five victories in seven games overall to leave SAFC as the last remaining side yet to suffer defeat this Championship season.
Formerly an assistant coach at the club, Marcina was promoted to Head Coach this past offseason. After some shrewd offseason additions, San Antonio appears set to reach its first postseason since 2017, having built a 13-point lead at the top of Group D with eight wins out of 11 overall in the regular season at the end of Week 11. SAFC scored 17 goals in its seven outings over the month of August, while also posting four shutouts defensively.
"It's an honor to receive this award," said Marcina. "To me, this is a team award and serves as recognition of the collective commitment of all players and staff. I am blessed to work alongside high-character and high-performing people who share our values and vision, and who are committed to upholding the daily standards set forth by the team."
Marcina received 41 percent of the vote to take the second monthly award of the season. The Charleston Battery's Mike Anhaeuser finished second with 35 percent after leading his side to four wins in an undefeated month that put the Battery on the verge of a 10th consecutive appearance in the Championship Playoffs, and Reno 1868 FC's Ian Russell finished third on 19 percent as his side won five of six games in August, including back-to-back wins against San Diego Loyal SC and Phoenix Rising FC to close the month.
The USL Championship's Coach of the Month award is voted upon by the USL Championship National Media Panel and the USL Championship Technical Committee, with each group responsible for 50 percent of the overall vote.
