San Antonio Scorpions News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Friday, May 9, 2014) - Potential pairings for the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup have been announced and the San Antonio Scorpions are guaranteed to play their opening match at Toyota Field. Depending on second round results, the Scorpions' opponents could be making the shirt trip down I-35 for the match.
The Austin Aztex of the PDL host the North Texas Rayados (USASA) on May 14th at House Park to determine which side will be San Antonio's opponent on May 28th. Home teams are determined by a random selection process among those clubs that have applied to host and whose venues meet the minimum tournament requirements.
San Antonio is 2-2 all-time in U.S. Open Cup play with their best performance coming in 2012. The Scorpions advanced to the fourth round that season by defeating MLS side Houston Dynamo at Toyota Field.
The U.S. Open Cup Third Round kicks off May 28 and features the 24 second-round winners and eight Division II (NASL) clubs, whose teams are matched geographically to play the winner of a specific second-round pairing. The winners of the remaining 16 second-round matches not paired with a Division II side will play against each other.
