San Antonio Stars News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Silver Stars announced today that professional basketball veteran James Wade has been added to the staff as an assistant coach and WNBA All-Star Vickie Johnson will return for her third season as a Silver Stars assistant.
"We are excited to have an outstanding staff that highlights player development as well as team development," head coach and general manager Dan Hughes said. "James brings an amazing combination of talents as a young coach. His work ethic and background as a player as well as his knowledge of the women's game is exciting. Over the past two seasons Vickie has really developed as an outstanding coach and will be asked to take on a larger role in the coaching staff this season."
Wade joins the Silver Stars staff as assistant coach after serving as a basketball intern during the 2012 season. During his first season on the bench, Wade will be responsible for leading individual player development. He will also assist with scouting duties including video breakdown and game planning.
A dual citizen of France and the United States, Wade has played professionally overseas in the United Kingdom, France, Russia, Spain, the Czech Republic and Belgium for the past 13 seasons. A 1998 graduate of Kennesaw State University, Wade is married to former Silver Stars guard Edwidge Lawson-Wade.
A two-time WNBA All-Star, Johnson returns for her third season as assistant coach in 2013 and takes on the responsibility of leading team development. During the past two seasons as assistant coach, Johnson mentored the Silver Stars guards to their two most productive seasons in franchise history. The San Antonio backcourt set a record for total assists (642), assists per game (18.9), assist to turnover ratio (1.45) and total steals (302) in 2012 while committing the fewest turnovers in franchise history (434) in 2011. Under Johnson's leadership, guard Danielle Robinson was a unanimous selection to the 2011 WNBA All-Rookie Team after leading all rookies in assists per game (3.9) and earned WNBA All-Defensive Team recognition in 2012. Veteran guard Becky Hammon earned her seventh WNBA All-Star selection in 2011 and finished ranked second in the WNBA in total assists (176) and assists per game (5.30) in 2012.
The first player in WNBA history to record 4,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists in a career, Johnson finished her WNBA career with 4,243 points, 1,641 rebounds and 1,205 assists in 13 seasons. Originally selected by the New York Liberty in the second round (12th overall) of the 1997 WNBA Elite Draft, Johnson spent nine seasons with the Liberty and four with the Silver Stars, retiring in 2009 as the league's all-time leader in games (410) and minutes played (12,435). She was one of 10 players named to the Silver Stars All-Decade Team during the 2012 season.
