San Antonio Scorpions News Release
Ottawa, ON, Canada (May 24, 2014) - The San Antonio Scorpions scored seconds before the final whistle to take all three points in a wild 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Fury at Keith Harris Stadium on the campus of Carleton University. Tomasz Zahorski knocked in the winning goal off of a corner kick to keep San Antonio undefeated on the road this season and give them their first three-match road winning streak in team history.
"We're 3-0 on the road, that's great to say. We battled hard today, and we needed three points today to stay in the top three. The guys played very hard and showed character- we're very happy," beamed San Antonio manager Alen Marcina after the match.
After a scoreless first half that saw few chances created for either side, the match opened up in the second on it's way to the thrilling finish. The Scorpions opened the scoring in the 56' minute when a Walter Restrepo cross intended for striker Eric Hassli was cleared over the endline by the Fury defense. On the ensuing corner kick from San Antonio's attacking right, Danny Barrera sent in an out-swinger with his right foot that found Greg Janicki unmarked at the back post. The defender rose to meet the ball and firmly headed it into the left side of the net for the 1-0 lead.
A pair of penalty kicks sandwiched around some individual brilliance by Ottawa's Sinisa UbiparipoviÃâ¡. First in the 68', Scorpions defender Julius James was given a yellow card and an Ottawa penalty awarded for pulling a player down in the box. Tony Donatelli converted the first PK in the expansion Fury's history to tie the game at 1 apiece. Just over ten minutes later, midfielder UbiparipoviÃâ¡ dribbled through the usually tight Scorpions defense and created space for himself at what looked to be a very harsh angle on the right side of San Antonio keeper David Bingham's goal. But the Bosnian's shot was true and he found the slim opening to give Ottawa the 2-1 lead.
The Fury crowd had not finished celebrating their goal when the Scorpions were awarded a penalty of their own in the 82'. Hassli stepped up to the spot and even though Ottawa 'keeper Devala Gorrick guessed correctly, the Frenchman's powerful shot sailed past the Fury netminder to know the score at two and give the Scorpions what looked to be a well-earned point on the road.
Then, the stoppage time magic happened to keep San Antonio's NASL Spring Season title hopes alive.
The Scorpions have a midweek U.S. Open Cup clash with NTX Rayados at Toyota Field and then make their first trek to Indianapolis next weekend to face the expansion Eleven in NASL play. Ottawa, meanwhile, will be home again to take on Canadian NASL rivals FC Edmonton next Saturday.
