San Antonio Scorpions News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Monday, January 26, 2014) - The San Antonio Scorpions will play Major League Soccer (MLS) side FC Dallas at Toyota Field in the 2nd annual deeproot Funds Cup, Scorpions President/General Manager Howard Cornfield and deeproot Funds Principal Robert Mueller announced today.
"We appreciate deeproot Funds once again showing their commitment to Soccer For A Cause and top-level soccer in San Antonio by making this match against MLS competition possible," said Cornfield. "We have the utmost respect for the entire FC Dallas organization and I hope our fans welcome them back to Toyota Field with another loud, packed stadium."
The Scorpions open training camp at S.T.A.R. Soccer Complex on February 16th in preparation for the match and will begin their quest for a second straight North American Soccer League (NASL) Championship when the Spring Season commences on April 4 at Toyota Field against the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
"deeproot is very excited to help kick off the defense of the Scorpions' title by bringing Major League Soccer to San Antonio for the second straight year in the deeproot Funds Cup," said Mueller. "We look forward to another great match against FC Dallas and cannot wait for February 28th to get here."
The game will kickoff at 7pm on February 28th and will be FC Dallas' final fixture before they begin MLS regular season play against the San Jose Earthquakes on March 7.
"San Antonio is a high-quality organization with great leadership at the top in owner Gordon Hartman," said FC Dallas President Dan Hunt. "They're the defending NASL Champions. They'll be a great opponent for us. The game will be very competitive - an ideal match to help us prepare for our season-opener here in Dallas the following weekend."
Last year, both teams played first-choice lineups in front of a sellout crowd of 7,967 fans at Toyota Field with the Alamo City boys scoring a stoppage time goal to earn the 1-1 draw.
"We've established a great relationship between both organizations over the past few seasons and I have a tremendous amount of respect for Oscar Pareja, his coaching staff, and the successful season their team had last year en route to the MLS Western Conference Semifinals," said Scorpions Head Coach Alen Marcina. "We hope to replicate the same excitement displayed last preseason between both teams and it will be a fantastic night of soccer for our fans in what will be the final preseason match for FC Dallas and our first chance to play in front of our passionate fans since lifting the Soccer Bowl in November."
This match will be included for all 2015 Scorpions season ticket holders with individual game tickets going on sale Thursday, January 29th. For information on Scorpions season tickets, call 210-495-8686 or visit sascorpions.com.
