FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Monday, January 26, 2015) - The Fort Lauderdale Strikers today announced defender Karsten Smith has signed for the club for the 2015 season. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Smith, 26, joins the Strikers after two years in Europe. In 2013, the center back made 16 appearances for Finnish first-division side Vaasan Palloseura (VPS), helping the club to a third-place finish and UEFA Europa League qualification. He most recently played with Knattspyrnufélag Akureyrar (KA) in Iceland.
"Karsten Smith is a solid left-footed center back who has good professional experience here in the U.S. and has performed well the past two seasons in Europe," General Manager Amaury Nunes said. "He has developed and matured as a player, and we look forward to seeing what he will add to our roster."
Before going to Europe, Smith played professionally in the U.S. with former USL Pro side F.C. New York in 2011 and San Antonio Scorpions in 2012.
Smith played four years of college soccer at American University in Washington D.C. from 2006-2009, captaining the Eagles his junior and senior years.
