San Antonio Iguanas Game Report

March 12, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
San Antonio Iguanas News Release

Odessa, Texas - The San Antonio Iguanas had the opportunity to leap frog Austin for first place in the Southeast Division with a victory tonight over Odessa but the league's top team had other ideas erasing an early two goal deficit to defeat the Iguanas 3-2 in regulation. With the victory, the Jackalopes improve to 44-11-6 and remain the top team in the CHL with 94 points. Odessa has the opportunity to reach the 100 point mark if they win their last three regular season games.

For the Iguanas, the loss is their first in regulation since February 12th, a span that covered 12 games. San Antonio drops to 39-16-6 and remains one point behind the Ice Bats for first place in the division.

The Iguanas jumped out to an early lead when Jim Lawrence scored his second goal in two games and his eighth of the season at the 2:16 mark of the first period. Ken Richardson would add to the Iggys lead with his 23rd goal of the season and his third goal in the last three games. Newcomer Russell Hogue continued to impress in his short time with the Iggys as he added assists on both Iguanas goals. Lawrence also added an assist to go with his goal.

With the score 2-0 in favor of the Iguanas at the midway point of the first period, Odessa turned up the offense with a pair of unlikely candidates. First, Adam Doyle scored just his second goal in 42 games pulling the Jacks to within a goal. Later in the period while on the power play, the Jacks got a goal from Alexander Liubomov (his third of the year) to tie the game heading into the first intermission.

The Jacks would take the lead for good with the game's final goal at the 8:47 mark of the second period when the team's leading goalscorer, Trevor Allman, scored his 36th goal of the season.

The Iguanas had a 5 on 3 power play in the final 10 minutes of the game but failed to beat Mike Gorman, the league's top goaltender, who watched his record improve to 31-7-3. Iguanas goaltender Brent Belecki dropped to 18-7-4.

The Iguanas are off until Friday night when they square off against division leaders and their probable first round playoff opponent Austin.
