TODAY'S NEWS

The 2019 San Antonio Commanders held its eighth of 22 Training Camp practices on Sunday at Central Catholic High School's Bob Benson '66 Stadium.

The practice started at 1:45 a.m. and finished shortly before 3:30 p.m. with the players wearing full pads.

The practice sessions was full speed with contact, although tackles were not completed to the ground.

With the full-padded practice allowing more contact than other days, the defensive players made themselves known. Cornerback Oscar White (Dubuque) had his best day of practice, finishing with three pass deflections and an interception.

Also standing out on the defensive side was inside linebacker Joel Lanning (Iowa State). The once quarterback-turned-linebacker was all over the field, making plays against inside against the run and deflecting two passes.

Perhaps the play of the day belonged to cornerback Duke Thomas (Texas) as he stripped Malik Earl (Missouri State) as Earl was trying to make his way upfield after catching a situational third down pass.

Austin Larkin (Purdue), the nephew of MLB Hall of Fame inductee Barry Larkin, spent the early part of training camp working as a defensive end, but has since moved back to his original position of outside linebacker.

Also for the first time in training camp, the coaching staff brought out yard markers to work third down situations in both 7-on-7 and full team sessions.

The Commanders' roster is at 75 players from 48 different colleges and universities. Texas A&M University and the University of Houston have the most representation on the roster with five players each.

A member of The Alliance of American Football, the San Antonio Commanders have an experienced professional coaching and front office staff led by head coach Mike Riley, general manager Daryl Johnston and team president Vic Gregovits.
