Sam Querrey Ranked #1 in US
March 18, 2013 - World TeamTennis (WTT)
Sacramento Capitals News Release
(Sacramento, CA, March 18, 2013) - Sam Querrey, who will play for the Sacramento Capitals of Mylan WTT this summer, became the 13th American No. 1 since the introduction of the computer rankings, taking over the top spot from John Isner in the rankings released today.
"It's a great feeling," Querrey said after a hard-fought 7-6, 6-7, 7-5 win over Marinko Matosevic in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. The win earned him a match against World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. Querrey beat Djokovic last fall, getting the better of the Serb 0-6, 7-6, 6-4 at the Paris Masters.
"Mentally it doesn't feel like a huge change," he said. "I feel like I have worked hard to earn it. Everyone seems like they've got their shot with Andy and Mardy and James and John, and so I feel like it's my turn now. But, you know, those guys are right on my heels and we will keep pushing each other. I know they want it, too. Hopefully we will just keep pushing each other and we can all keep moving up the rankings." Querrey's two wins ensured that he'd move up and finish the tournament inside the top 20 in the ATP world rankings.
Being the No. 1 isn't an illusory title or a simple number next to your name. With it come responsibilities and expectations that Fish, who held the top American spot for over a year in 2011 and 2012, knows too well. "It's a little more pressure than you think it is," Fish said. "There are a lot of guys gunning for you. But Sam's been out here for a while. He has been in a lot of situations. "
Both Sam Querrey and Mardy Fish will play for the Sacramento Capitals during the 2013 season. With Mark Knowles and Ryan Sweeting returning and the addition of world No. 1 junior Taylor Townsend and Megan Moulton-Levy, a doubles specialist ranked #73 in the world, it looks to be an outstanding Capitals line-up this season.
The first home match of the season is July 7. All home matches begin at 7:35 p.m. and are played at Capitals Stadium at the corner of Greenback Lane and Sunrise Blvd. in Citrus Heights. For more information, log on to www.saccaps.com. Phone: (916) 304-5722
