Sam Carel to Lead Marlins on Field in 2014

Morehead City, N.C.- The Morehead City Marlins have announced Sam Carel as the team's head coach for the 2014 season. Carel spent the 2013 season as an assistant coach for the Marlins, serving as the hitting instructor and third base coach. He becomes the fourth head coach in Marlins franchise history.

Carel is entering his eighth season as the head coach of Junior College powerhouse Jefferson College. He has amassed a career record of 272-131, and has been named conference Coach of the Year six times. In his first seven seasons as head coach of the Vikings, he has lead his team to seven conference championships, three Regional championships, and two appearances in the Junior College World Series. He has sent 101 of his former players to four year institutions, including 55 who have signed with NCAA Division One schools.

Carel was a student assistant and manager for Missouri State from 1997 to 2000. He returned in 2002 as the Bears' infield and hitting instructor and was with the program through the 2006 season. While with the program, Carel saw 46 of his former players sign professional contracts. Carel received a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education from Missouri State in 1999, and his Master's from Missouri State in 2005. He has two sons, Max and Charlie.

Our fans and players really enjoyed his presence last summer, and his familiarity with the organization and area will be a huge benefit for him."

The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 18th season in 2014, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 65 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
