June 1, 2003 - A-League (A-League)
Milwaukee Wave United News Release
Milwaukee, WI â It was a battle of the halves with the Wave United controlling the first half, but the second half was the one that mattered with the Syracuse Salty Dogs controlling the tempo and scoring three goals to win the game 3-1 in front of 1,872 fans at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee. The win enabled Syracuse to gain a split on its two-game road trip which saw the Salty Dogs fall at Minnesota 4-2 the night before. Meanwhile, Wave United had its two-game winning streak snapped as it fell back to the .500 mark at 2-2.
The first goal for the Salty Dogs came in the 50th minute when Michael Kirmse took a shot from six yards out on the left side to tally his first goal of the season, putting the ball just out of the reach of Wave United goalkeeper Jim Larkin. The go-ahead goal came in the 63rd minute when Gabriel Valencia caught the rebound off a deflection from the Ian Woan shot and was able to slip the ball past Larkin for his sixth goal of the season.
The third and final goal for the Salty Dogs came during injury time. Wave United had left the net empty, having sent Larkin to play on the offensive end hoping to tie the score. The ball was cleared and Michael Ritch was able to take a shot from 45 yards out that just rolled over the end-line to put the game out of reach for Milwaukee.
The Wave United's goal came early when John Ball scored his first goal of the season and his 22nd A-League career goal in the 13th minute to put Milwaukee ahead 1-0. Wave United had 11 shots to the Salty Dogs 10, with each goalkeeper recording four saves.
Syracuse improved to 5-2-0 (15 points) as it regained the top spot in the Northeast Division. Wave United failed to improve its standing as it holds down fourth in the Central Division with a mark of 2-2-0 (six points).
Wave United will take on the Minnesota Thunder next Saturday, June 7 at 7:00 at Eastview High School in Apple Valley MN. The series between the two teams is tied at 1-1. Wave United's next home will be Sunday, June 8, at 4:00 pm when it takes on the Portland Timbers at Uihlein Soccer Park.
