Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers (36-33) dropped the series finale against the Salt Lake Bees (39-32) by a final score of 6-3 Monday night at Cheney Stadium.
Catcher Tuffy Gosewisch (2x3, RBI, BB), center fielder Leonys Martin (2x4, 2 2B) and first baseman Daniel Vogelbach (1x3, RBI, 2 BB) led the way for the Tacoma offense in the losing effort.
Tacoma starting pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma (0-1) allowed four runs and two walks while managing three strikeouts over two innings on the mound for the Rainiers. He was credited with the loss.
Iwakuma worked quickly during the top half of the first - striking out the first two batters he faced - but surrendered a solo home run off the bat of Kaleb Cowart, giving the Bees a 1-0 advantage.
The Rainiers quickly countered in the bottom half however, as Martin lined a double down the right field line and came around to score when Vogelbach singled up the middle, tallying his 37th RBI and tying the game at 1-1.
The Bees rallied in the top half of the second, scoring three runs on three hits and two walks to take a 4-1 lead. Salt Lake attempted to tally a fifth run, but Martin launched a spectacular throw from center field to cut down Rey Navarro at the plate and end the inning on a double play.
Salt Lake would extend its lead during the top half of the third as Jefry Marte led off with a solo home run to right field, moving the score to 5-1.
Back to back RBI base-hits from Gosewisch and designated hitter Gordon Beckham during the bottom of the fifth cut the Tacoma deficit to 5-3.
Marte smacked his second home run of the night during the top of the eighth - a solo shot to extend the Bees lead to 6-3.
Jonathan Aro (1-0) allowed just one run over three innings during his relief appearance for Tacoma Monday night, adding three strikeouts and zero walks.
The Rainiers and Bees return to action Tuesday night for the series finale - first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Right hander Chase De Jong (2-3, 4.32) will get the start for the Tacoma and righty Daniel Wright (2-2, 7.43) will take the mound for Salt Lake.
