Salem Red Sox News Release
SALEM, VA - The Salem Red Sox (70-46) fell in Wednesday night's back and forth contest 4-3. Billy Cook drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth to give the Delmarva Shorebirds (65-51) their first victory of the series.
The Red Sox took the early lead in the bottom of the second inning on Nick Northcut's 31st double of the season scoring Nick Decker. The Sox were able to get their first run of the year off Ty Blach, all with two outs.
Delmarva shot back in the top half of the very next frame evening the score at one when Colton Cowser reached on a fielder's choice & throwing error by Matthew Lugo. That error drove in Darell Hernaiz.
Delmarva jumped out to their first lead of the game in the fifth inning when Colton Cowser knocked his first hit of the series in a timely fashion driving in Reed Trimble and Connor Norby giving the Shorebirds a 3-1 lead.
The Red Sox evened the score in the seventh on a Brainer Bonacci 11 pitch at-bat resulting in his second double of the season scoring Nick Decker. Tyler Miller delivered the next clutch hit on a line drive to center field on the first pitch of the at-bat scoring Bonacci. The Red Sox kept the bases loaded but could not come through with two outs.
In the top of the eighth Delmarva played the comeback role once again when Billy Cook drove a fastball to center field scoring Donta' Williams. The final score of Wednesday night's game was 4-3. The two squads will be in action for game three on Thursday night at 7:05 PM.
