
SAL Announces 2002 All-Star Team

John H. Moss, President of the South Atlantic League, announced the selection of the 2002 Annual All-Star Team. The All-Star Team was voted on by all the 16 South Atlantic League Team's Field Managers, General Managers and Team Media Outlets (Press/Radio/TV).
The Annual All-Star Team was highlighted by the selections for Most Outstanding Pitcher, Most Valuable Player and Most Outstanding Major League Prospect. Macay McBride of the Macon Braves was selected as the Most Outstanding Pitcher. McBride currently ranks 1st in the South Atlantic League with a 2.21 ERA for the season. Walter Young of the Hickory Crawdads was selected as both the South Atlantic League's Most Valuable Player and Most Outstanding Major League Prospect. Young has made an outstanding run at the South Atlantic League Triple Crown and currently ranks 1st in the South Atlantic League in Home Runs with 22 and tied for 1st in RBI with 94 and is 3rd in Batting posting a .333 Batting Average. Young also currently ranks in the top 2 of four other South Atlantic League Offensive Categories including 1st in Hits with 152, 1st in Extra Base Hits with 56, 2nd in Slugging Percentage at .556 and tied for 2nd in Doubles with 32.
The Hickory Crawdads placed the most members on the South Atlantic League Annual All-Star Team with a total of 6 including five players and the manager. The Crawdads' representatives are Walter Young at First Base, Jeff Keppinger at Second Base, Vic Buttler and Jeremy Harts in 2 of the Outfield Positions and Chris Shelton at Designated Hitter. Tony Beasley rounds out the Crawdads' selections as the Manager. Two other South Atlantic League clubs (Capital City Bombers and Macon Braves) placed two members each on the team. The Columbus RedStixx, Greensboro Bats, Kannapolis Intimidators, Lexington Legends and South Georgia Waves placed one member each including the Legends' Pitching Coach Charley Taylor who made the Team as the Coach's representative for the 2nd consecutive year after tying for last year's honor.
