Saints Sweep Weekend, Win in Overtime Again
October 18, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - For the second straight night, the Dubuque Fighting Saints took the action to overtime. This time, Nathan Sucese snapped a shot from the right wing on a three-on-one break past Ryan Larkin with 8.3 seconds remaining in overtime, pacing the Saints to a 3-2 win on Saturday night.
The win, in effect, swept the weekend for the Fighting Saints, who stand one point behind the RoughRiders for the top spot in the USHL's Eastern Conference.
After a save by Hunter Miska at one end and a botched centering pass by the RoughRiders, Sucese brought the puck up with Mitchell Smith on his wing, and ripped the shot home, preventing a shootout, and sending the road warriors home happy.
Miska was outstanding throughout the entire contest. He made a season-high 38 saves on 40 shots- many of them of the grade-A variety. He held down the fort, allowing only a power play goal by Ross Colton while being outshot 16-3 in the final 20 minutes. He stonewalled Colton on a later opportunity in the third period off of a faceoff, keeping the score tied.
Charlie Combs started the scoring for Dubuque with his first USHL goal; a seeing-eye backhander from the high slot that evaded Larkin, proved to be the game winner on Saturday night. He took a bouncing puck off of a blocked shot from Shane Kavanagh, and shoveled a backhander from distance into the net.
Evan Smith stashed home his own rebound moments prior to Combs' goal, as he followed his own shot to the net on the power play, tying the game at one. The Fighting Saints' power play faced off against the top penalty killing unit in the USHL, and they came through to tie the game. That continued defenseman Spenser Young's point streak, extending it to five games.
Jack Achan broke the ice on the scoreboard, snapping a shot off the wing that trickled through Miska. Cedar Rapids would be held off the board for the following 36 minutes of action.
The two wins followed the prior two-game losing streak from last week, and have started a two-game winning streak before continuing the road trip for the next five games.
The next stop on the road trip is Fargo, North Dakota as the Fighting Saints play the Fargo Force for a back-to-back starting on Friday, October 23 at 7:05 p.m. Hear all of the action on the Fighting Saints Radio Network, Super Hits 106.1 FM.
