Saints Split Preseason Games – Make Roster Cuts

October 13, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
San Angelo Saints News Release

SAN ANGELO – The San Angelo Saints went 1-1 in their preseason games against Odessa over the weekend and as the team enters the 2nd week of training camp, the first round of roster cuts were made today by head coach Ray Edwards.

Friday night the Saints took to the ice for the first time under Edwards and skated to a 5-3 loss to the Odessa Jackalopes. Despite outplaying the Jacks for much of the game, a couple of defensive mistakes led to Odessa goals and an outstanding performance by the Jacks' goaltender turned the Saints away time after time. New Saints Derek Booth and Taras Foremsky, and returning forward Steve Roberts all recorded goals for the Saints Friday night. On Saturday the Saints returned the favor with a 3-2 win over the Jacks in Odessa. Foremsky notched his second goal of the preseason with Ryan Finnerty and Andy Doktorchik also lighting the lamp to lead the Saints to the win.

Today, Edwards had some tough decisions to make and has released 5 players, trimming the Saints' roster down to just 20. Two more players will have to be released by Wednesday and the remaining 18 will make up the Saints' opening day roster. Released today were forwards Brett Cross, Chris Larson, George Avery and Jay Ott, and goaltender Rob Carter. Forward Kevin Vandewater remains on the Negotiation List recovering from a preseason training injury.

This week's training camp schedule includes daily practices at 10 a.m. with Media Day scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 16th at 1 p.m. at the coliseum. All media is invited to have lunch with the players and tour the new locker room and weight room. Media passes will also be distributed at this time.

The Saints' regular season begins Friday in Odessa as the Saints take on the Jackalopes at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Magic 98 radio (98.7 KELI-FM) and on the internet at www.sanangelosaints.com. The Saints' home opener is Saturday at 7:05 p.m. against the expansion Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. Fans can bring their favorite tailgate supplies and party with Magic 98 in the coliseum parking lot from 5-7 p.m. Every fan through the doors will receive a free Magnet Schedule from 1st Community Federal Credit Union and there will be 500 free t-shirts from Gandy Ink tossed into the crowd during the intermissions. There is also a free Post-Game Party with the Saints players at the Little River Club.
