Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Two goals in 2:20 late in the first period propelled the Dubuque Fighting Saints past the Waterloo Black Hawks in the first game of the Cowbell Cup series Friday at the Mystique Ice Center.
The Cowbell Cup title and trophy were announced Thursday and will be awarded at the end of the season to the team with the top record from head-to-head contests between Waterloo, Dubuque, and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
The Saints broke a scoreless tie at 17:10 of the first period when Kenny Matheson flipped in a rebound from the top of the crease. Brother Mike Matheson added to the advantage at 19:30, stepping into the offensive zone and firing a shot through a screen and past Jay Williams.
Waterloo's lone goal was recorded at 10:30 of the third period; Max Edson's low wrister beat Matt Morris to the stick side. However, T.J. Moor delivered an empty-netter in the closing seconds to seal the decision.
Williams made 22 saves in the loss, while Morris stopped 17 shots.
The Black Hawks make their home debut Saturday in another Cowbell Cup game against the RoughRiders. Seats still remain for the first game in Party Town during 2011-2012. The opening faceoff is at 7:05.
