Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa - After a Thanksgiving layoff, the Dubuque Fighting Saints returned home for a game at the Mystique Community Ice Center, where they entered with a 7-0-1 record, on Saturday night - playing host to the Indiana Ice. A three point trip to Muskegon and Youngstown, the Saints' longest journey of the year, and a 1-0 victory over Chicago at home has kept the Saints perched atop the USHL's Western Conference with 24 points, four points above Sioux Falls for first place.

After not allowing a goal for 144:26 of game time, Fighting Saints' netminder Matt Morris surrendered a goal to Indiana's Peter Schneider, who was able to slide a backhanded attempt between Morris' legs, scored 18:20 into the first period for the frame's only goal. Morris stopped 7 of the 8 shots he faced in that period, and his counterpart Casey DeSmith was a perfect 11 for 11. There was no scoring through the second period, as Dubuque mustered on three shots on goal and Indiana was able to fire thirteen onto Morris. Through forty minutes, Dubuque had not taken a penalty and had not been able to capitalize on either of their two powerplay opportunities.

Both teams were able to tally goals in the third period. Blake Coleman scored for Indiana, making it a 2-0 game just under five minutes into the frame. John Gaudreau finally got the Saints onto the board with around eight minutes remaining in the game, redirecting in the slot a Tyler Amburgey drive from the blue line. Derek Docken picked up the other assist for the Fighting Saints. Coleman added an empty net goal to seal the victory for Indiana, and the Saints lost their first game in regulation at the Mystique Community Ice Center 3-1, despite Morris' 24 saves on 26 shots.

The Saints return to the ice on Friday at the MCIC against Muskegon. Doors open at 6 PM.
