Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
Muskegon, Mich. - For the first time on their longest homestand of the season, the Muskegon Lumberjacks were denied compensation for their efforts Saturday night, as the Des Moines Buccaneers beat the Jacks 5-3 at the L.C. Walker Arena.
The Buccaneers outlasted Muskegon through a shootout (4-3) and an overtime thriller (5-4) in the teams' previous two clashes. The Jacks (7-6-4) have collected 18 points on the season and remain in third place in the United States Hockey League's Eastern Conference.
The Buccaneers (9-3-1) gained the early edge on a short-handed goal by Dajon Mingo (5:49) as he outpaced Matt Berry and snapped a stick-side laser past Joel Vienneau. Charlie Taft got on his horse 5 minutes later, when he evened the score at 1-1 with a short-handed breakaway response for Muskegon, the only short-handed tally Des Moines has conceded this season.
Just 74 seconds into the second period, Brendan Woods notched his first goal in 12 games as his shot slithered home to give Muskegon their first lead of the game. The Jacks continued to create chances throughout the period and looked the sharper of the two squads after both teams finally shook off the Thanksgiving leftovers.
A goal by Justin Selman at 3:51 tied the game at 2-2 before Mike Conderman evened things up less than a minute later. Conderman picked up his fourth goal of the season as he nipped through the crease to nestle the puck in the back of Shibrowski's net. Mingo then scored his second goal of the game on the power play to tie the contest at 3-3. Mingo then completed a hat trick with another power-play marker before Connor Kucera chipped in an empty netter that clenched the game for the Buccaneers, 5-3.
The Lumberjacks will wrap up their five-game homestand tomorrow evening with a showdown against the Youngstown Phantoms, their first meeting of the season. It will be the first of three Super Saver Sundays presented by DTE Energy this season, which means fans can get tickets for just $6, and also have a chance to win a $750 gift card from Home Depot toward home improvements.
It will also be M.A.C. Night, and all fans are encouraged to bring a box of macaroni and cheese to shake as a noisemaker throughout the game. The boxes will then be collected after the game and donated to the Mission for Area People food pantry. Call (231) 726-3879 or visit the L. C. Walker Arena box office to get your tickets.
