Saints Come up Short against Goldeyes 3-2

WINNIPEG, MB - For six innings the Saints didn't have a hit, but through the first four innings they actually had the lead. The pitching of Zach Nuding and two long balls, one by former Saints first baseman David Bergin, were enough to do in the Saints 3-2 on Saturday night at Shaw Park. The loss dropped the Saints to 18-10 and a 1.0 game lead in the North over the Goldeyes.

Early on Nuding didn't get help from his defense. He struck out Brady Burzynski in the first, but he reached when catcher Alixon Suarez couldn't handle the pitch. Nate Hanson followed with a walk to put runners at first and second. Two ground outs later and Nuding was out of the jam.

In the second the Saints put up a pair of runs without the aid of a hit. Tony Thomas led off with a walk. Tim Colwell hit a grounder to short and Andrew Sohn's throw to second was dropped by Mason Katz putting runners at first and second with nobody out. Maxx Garrett followed with a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third. Jon Kristoffersen got the Saints on the board with a sacrifice fly to left. Josh Romanski's throw home got past the catcher Suarez and the pitcher backing up, Nuding, allowing Colwell to score and making it 2-0.

Nuding walked one in the third, fourth and sixth, but the Saints didn't have a hard hit ball in any inning. In the seventh, however, Garrett broke up the no-hitter with a lined single to left. Nuding went 7.1 innings allowing two unearned runs on two hits while walking five and striking out three.

The Saints, trailing 3-2 in the eighth, had a small opportunity when Brady Shoemaker singled with one out. That hit removed Nuding for reliever Victor Capellan. He struck out Anthony Gallas, whose eight game hitting streak came to an end. With two outs Thomas singled to left putting runners at first and second. The Goldeyes brought in their closer Ryan Chaffee who struck out Tim Colwell to end the inning. Chaffee retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his league leading ninth save of the season.

With the Saints leading 2-0 in the third Andrew Sohn doubled to right off of John Straka. With two outs Bergin knocked home Sohn with a single to right-center making it 2-1 Saints.

In the fifth Sohn and Bergin came calling again. With one out Sohn hit a fly ball to right which carried out for a solo homer, his second of the season, to tie the game at two. Two batters later Bergin hit his third home run in two games, a fly ball that also carried over the right field wall, his eighth of the season, that proved to be the deciding run. Sohn finished 4-4 with a double, home, an RBI and a run scored while Bergin was 2-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. Straka went 6.0 innings allowing three runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out five.

The same two teams meet Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in the finale of the three game series at Shaw Park. The Saints send RHP Jason Creasy (2-2, 3.96) to the mound against Goldeyes RHP Edwin Carl (2-0, 2.78). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
