Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

Five different player scored for Saints and All-Star goaltender Scot Reid made 31 saves for the shutout as the San Angelo Saints beat the Corpus Christi Rayz Saturday night.

It was Reid's second shutout in as many games against Corpus Christi this year. On November 8, he shutout the Rayz 1-0 making 37 saves at the Memorial Coliseum.

The Rayz controlled the pace in the first period, but the teams remained scoreless as end to end chances for both teams highlighted the opening period. Scott Redi and Greg Hewitt traded brilliant saves as the Rayz forechecking and physical play seemed to give the Saints defense problems in their own end. However, no goals would come from the action.

In the second period, the Saints peppered the Rayz net with a season-high 25 shots on net in the middle frame. The continued pressure on the Rayz broke the scoreless tie as Kevin Vandewater took a drop pass from Jarret Metz as he entered the zone and let a wrist shot go from the right circle to beat Greg Hewitt and get the first goal of the hockey game. The teams then exchanged chances as both goaltenders made brilliant saves before the Saints tallied again to take a 2-0 lead. Defenseman Kevin Wilson scored his first goal of the season on a rebound from the left circle. Trevor Weisgerber shot the puck from the right side and Hewitt made a remarkable save with the glove, but could not keep the rebound in control. After sprawling to make the initial save the Saints defenseman found the net for the Saints second goal of the game.

The third period was not much kinder to the Rayz. Metz, Steve Roberts and Andy Doktorchik scored in the span of 1:32 to break the game wide open in the final period. After The Rayz surrendered Roberts' goal to make the score 4-0, Malcolm Cameron pulled Greg Hewitt for Craig Hillier. Hewitt, despite earning his third loss of the season was once again brilliant for Corpus Christi making 36 saves, including some remarkable chances throughout the game.

The Rayz dropped to 15-22-3 on the season and 4-15-1 on the road. The Saints improved to 23-13-5 on the season and have won eight straight games at home. They have also earned at least a point in nine straight games. Saints forward Chris Minard's assist on Wilson's goal extended his point scoring streak to ten games. Both teams went 0 for 3 on the power play. The Rayz next game will be Wednesday night as the Rayz take on the Laredo Bucks in Laredo.
